That homage to the “Indiana Jones” movies also serves as something of an indicator of Netflix’s film aspirations, which have evolved over the years as its subscriber base has grown to 214 million and filmmaker resistance to its streaming-first model has waned. The director Rawson Thurber calls it “a tip of the cap to the greatest action-adventure film of all time.” Adorned in khakis and a fedora, he whistles the theme to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as he walks down the stairs. Thus, Wrong Turn 4 and 5’s uniquely unpleasant plots mean the franchise can boast the dubious honor of being one of the only slasher series where no one survives for two movies running.Toward the end of “Red Notice,” Netflix’s flashiest and most expensive attempt to date at starting a film franchise, Ryan Reynolds descends into a cave to search for a bounty pilfered by Nazis. While the movie doesn't show her dying onscreen, the fact that the villains pick up the blinded, lost survivor in the closing moments of the rather hopeless ending makes it all but certain. However, he is eventually accidentally released by the movie’s heroine, who he promptly blinds and leaves to wander the town. As the trio of siblings unleashes hell on the tone outside, Hellraiser star Doug Bradley’s Wrong Turn franchise newcomer Maynard is being held on suspicion of a string of murders he and the Odetts siblings committed. For much of its runtime, Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines poorly disguises the sequel’s limited budget by staging the action inside a small-town police station. Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, meanwhile, manages to be even bleaker by letting not only the killers but also their newfound accomplice survive while all the non-villainous characters still die (or at least, are heavily implied to). However, when apparent final girl Sara overpowers One Eye and steals a snowmobile to make a daring escape, her prospects seem promising - only for her to then be decapitated by a razor-wire trap alongside the friend she saved, Kenia. Set in an abandoned asylum, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings establishes a cast of potential survivors more annoying and less well-equipped than those of the original movie, and it is no surprise that may are quickly killed off. Of the two movies, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings features the more aggressively hopeless ending, with the film’s entire cast being killed off save for the villainous trio of killer siblings. Nonetheless, this makes the Wrong Turn movies one of the only slasher franchises to leave no one but the villain standing - twice. This is partially because franchise villain Three Finger is killed off in Wrong Turn 3, meaning the remaining sequels are actually prequels to the first film. Thanks to their strange chronology, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings and Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines both end with the cannibals slaying all the heroes, leaving no token final survivor to make it to the next movie in the series. However, while the movies may not be perfect, the Wrong Turn franchise does boast one bizarrely impressive slasher franchise achievement. Some fans preferred this mean-spirited approach, but for many, the series peaked with its first and second installments. Despite the relatively tame terror of the original outing, the Wrong Turn sequels grew gradually more absurd and cartoony in their violence, and by the third sequel, the series was essentially a blackly comic gross-out horror show wherein the villainous Odetts siblings were the real focus, rather than their victims. However, the movie still managed to spawn a string of increasingly cheap sequels and eventually a 2021 Wrong Turn reboot (which wisely made a joke of the original movies). Despite referencing the likes of The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original movie owed more inspiration to ‘80s backwoods slashers like Just Before Dawn and Madman as Wrong Turn eschewed attempts at social commentary in favor of thrilling chases and creative kills. Released in 2003, the original Wrong Turn was a gory, fast-paced survival horror that pitted doomed city slickers against a trio of super-strong inbred mountain men. In a fate rare even among horror franchises, the fourth and fifth Wrong Turn movies manage to leave no characters alive to see the next installment (except the villains, that is).
